The lips attract attention in terms of aesthetic appearance because of the fact that they are in the middle of the face, like the nose. For this reason, luster and fuller lips have been regarded as a sign of beauty, charm and youth since ancient times. Lip aesthetics is an aesthetic procedure to make the lips look more beautiful.
There are changes in the lips along with aging. The upper lip elongates and sags, the red area gets thinner, mouth corners descend, wrinkles in the vertical direction emerge. The thinness of the pink parts on the lips is sometimes genetically congenital.
Lip augmentation is applied to those who have genetically thin lips, whose lips have been thinned due to aging-related tissue loss over time and whose lips look normal but want to look younger, more beautiful and attractive with thicker and fuller lips.
In addition to this, if the lip is thicker than normal, lip reduction can be done in the form of lip aesthetics. Sometimes lip aesthetics is performed in our patients who have sagging and excess skin on their lips.
Lips has an important place especially in the concept of facial beauty. Beautiful lips make the face look more beautiful and attractive. Jaw structure, nose and teeth are important in the appearance of the lips. The size, the width and the placement of the lips, the thickness of the upper and lower lip and how much the teeth are visible while smiling are important criteria. The lower lip should be slightly fuller than the upper lip. The gap between the lips should not exceed 3 mm when the teeth are closed.
The most common procedure we perform in the lip region aesthetic is lip augmentation or lip thickening. Lip augmentation for aesthetic purposes has been applied for many years. There are two groups of methods in lip augmentation, permanent and temporary methods. Temporary methods are filling materials and partially fat injection....Permanent lip augmentation procedures include dermofat fat-skin grafts, and fillings made with a number of artificial materials.
Lip fillings are one of the most frequently demanded applications for lip augmentation. Fillers containing hyaluronic acid in lip fillings are the most commonly used ones. Lip fillings method is to enlarge the red area of the lip and the lip line area, and as a result, make the lip look more fuller. Since the effect of ready made lip fillers is temporary, it is advantageous for showing the patient the result temporarily, but it is an application that needs to be repeated.
Another method of lip augmentation that I frequently recommend and apply to my patients is to fill lips with skin fat instead of fat tissue. This method, known as “dermo-fat graft“, is also an ideal technique in terms of being permanent. In this technique, fat layer under the deep layer (dermis) of the patient's skin is removed as much as necessary and placed in the lip through an inconspicuous incision. The skin and fat tissue to be used as a filler can be obtained from different parts of the body. For this technique my preferred region is the pubic area and the c-section scar is the area I use most frequently for this purpose. If the patient has a problem with the c-section scar, a scar revision procedure can be performed in the same session during the tissue removal process. It is a practical operation performed with local anesthesia. At the end of the operation, lips gain volume and look fuller. There is no scar of this surgery left on the lips.
Also, methods such as fat injections, muscle graft or fascial graft placement are used to thicken the lip.
Silicone injection is not a preferred method for lip augmentation. In the past years silicone was used for lip augmentation, but nowadays this is not the case. Complications occur in the late period due to silicone. In the United States, silicone injection has been banned.
In lip augmentation, oil taken from other parts of the body can be used as filling material, but this fat tissue largely loses its volume, that is broken down by the body within 3-4 months. To achieve a good result, too much fat should be injected. This is not a very desirable situation because the person will have to walk around for 4-5 months with very large and abnormal lips.
