When ear aesthetics is mentioned, prominent ear deformity, which is commonly known as, comes to mind. Problems such as the auricle being larger than normal, the angle of the ear with the hairy skin being too high, the developmental disorder in the ear folds, and the large cartilage behind the ear cause ear shape disorders. Ear shape disorder can negatively affect psychosocial development, especially in early childhood. With prominent ear surgery, these problems can be eliminated and a recovery in self-confidence can be achieved.

What is Prominent Ear?

Generally, the prominent ear is defined as a “big ear”. This is not true. Because there is no difference between the ear size of a person with prominent ears and a person with normal ears. The problem is only with the shape of the ear cartilages. Prominent ear deformity is a disorder in which the auricle is curved forward more than normal. In prominent ear disorder, it is that the auricle cartilage develops excessively and the Y-shaped fold in the auricle is flattened and lost.

Why Ear Aesthetics?

Prominent ear disorder can lead to serious psychological problems and distortions in body image, especially in children during pre-school and later school periods, as it attracts the attention of their friends and is the subject of mocking.

For this reason, there are people who do not go to school, do not want to go to school, and whose success is negatively affected. Prominent ear disorder does not cause any disease other than aesthetic concerns. The correction to be made is a completely optional aesthetic operation.

How is prominent ear aesthetic surgery performed?

Ear aesthetics can be easily performed under general anesthesia in the hospital in pediatric patients and under local anesthesia in office conditions in adult patients. Ear aesthetics is applied in the form of reaching the ear cartilages with an incision made behind the ear and shaping them with permanent sutures. If there is abnormal growth in the ear cartilage, weakening or removal can be done. In people who have not formed ear folds, the folds are reconstructed.

The surgical procedure is a permanent procedure. The shape given is expected to be permanent for life. The surgery takes about an hour on average. After surgery, a bandage is applied over the ears. If general anesthesia is used, overnight hospitalization is required. Hospitalization is generally not required for procedures performed under local anesthesia. The patient is sent home the same day.

What Happens After Prominent Ear Surgery?

After prominent ear surgery, there may be mild pain that can be controlled with painkillers. Two days later, the bandage is opened and the control is done. It is recommended to wear a headband all day for the first 2 weeks and at night for the next 2 weeks.

When should prominent ear surgery be performed?

I think the ideal age is around the age of 13-14, when the auricle development reaches almost 60 percent of the adult size. However, since the deformity of the auricle is a mockery among children, the operation can be performed at an earlier age, especially in the preschool period.

Will there be visible surgical scars after prominent ear surgery?

Since the operation is performed behind the ear, no surgical scar is visible from the outside.

Is prominent ear surgery a painful procedure?

Prominent ear surgery is perhaps one of the simplest operations of plastic surgery. In surgeries performed with local anesthesia, some needle-related pain is felt when only local anesthesia is performed, and this pain goes away within 1-2 minutes. Post-operative pain can be controlled with simple painkillers. In total, prominent ear surgery can be said to be a minimally painful procedure.

What happens in the post-operative period in ear aesthetics?

After the surgery, a pressure bandage is applied over the ears. The first dressing is done after 3 days. For a few days, patients are given tennis player bands. There may be a slight swelling and redness in the ear for 4-5 days, after which the patient can return to normal completely.

What are the Risks of Ear Aesthetics?

Although there may be risks such as bleeding, infection and wound opening in ear aesthetic surgery, they occur very rarely. There are risks such as cartilage irregularity, suture reaction, deformity, asymmetry, and reopening in the late period in ear aesthetics. However, these risks are tried to be minimized with careful surgical technique. It should also be noted that each person’s cartilage is of a different structure.

What is the optimal result of ear aesthetic surgeries?

As a result of ear aesthetic surgery, a normal and unobtrusive, natural-looking auricle is obtained. Ear aesthetic surgeries are one of the most pleasing aesthetic surgeries because they do not leave any scars, are performed under local anesthesia in a short time, and are permanent. Ear aesthetics is an aesthetic surgery with high patient satisfaction.
